Spring in Texas means warmer weather, longer days, and the perfect opportunity to give your septic system some attention. After a winter of heavy use, a spring checkup helps catch small issues before they become summer emergencies. Here's your spring septic checklist.
1. Schedule a Pump-Out If You're Due
If it's been 3+ years since your last pump-out, spring is an ideal time to schedule one. Pumping before the hot, dry summer months ensures your system starts the season with maximum capacity. Don't wait until you have a problem — preventive pumping is far cheaper than emergency repairs.
2. Inspect the Drain Field Area
Walk the area over your drain field and look for:
- Standing water or wet spots — Can indicate drain field saturation or failure
- Unusually lush grass — May mean effluent is surfacing
- Odors — Sewage smells indicate a problem
- Erosion or settling — Can expose or damage components
If you notice any of these, call a professional for an inspection.
3. Check Tank Lids and Access Points
Inspect your septic tank lids for cracks, damage, or deterioration. Damaged lids are a safety hazard and can allow debris and rainwater into your tank. If lids are cracked or broken, have them replaced promptly.
4. Clear Vegetation
Remove any trees, shrubs, or deep-rooted plants growing near your drain field — roots can invade and clog distribution pipes. Keep the drain field area planted with grass only. Also clear any brush or debris that has accumulated around tank access points.
5. Check Your Garbage Disposal Habits
If spring cleaning means you're using your garbage disposal more, remember that food waste increases sludge in your septic tank. Consider composting food waste instead, or at minimum, be aware that you may need more frequent pumping if you use a disposal regularly.
6. Review What Goes Down Your Drains
Spring is a good time to reset your household's septic-friendly habits:
- Switch to septic-safe toilet paper and cleaning products
- Stop pouring grease down the drain
- Ensure no one is flushing wipes, feminine products, or other non-flushable items
- Use a lint filter on your washing machine to reduce solids entering the system
7. Check for Slow Drains
If any drains in your home are slow, don't ignore them. Slow drains can indicate a developing problem in your septic system. Have them checked before they become full backups.
8. Test Aerobic System Components
If you have an aerobic treatment unit, spring is a good time to verify:
- The aerator is running (you should hear it)
- The alarm system works (test it)
- Sprinkler heads in the spray field are functioning
- Your maintenance contract is current (TCEQ requires one)
9. Conserve Water
Spring often means more laundry (spring cleaning!), more showers (after outdoor activities), and more water use overall. Be mindful of spreading out water-intensive activities to avoid overwhelming your system.
10. Schedule a Professional Inspection
If your system hasn't been professionally inspected in the last 1–3 years, spring is a great time. An inspection catches problems early, documents your system's condition, and provides peace of mind.
