Aerobic vs Conventional Septic Systems: Which Is Right for Your Property?

When installing a new septic system, one of the most important decisions you'll make is choosing between a conventional (anaerobic) system and an aerobic treatment unit (ATU). Each has its advantages, and the right choice depends on your property's soil, lot size, water table, and local regulations.

Conventional Septic Systems

A conventional septic system is the traditional, gravity-fed design that most people picture when they think of a septic system. Wastewater flows from the home into the septic tank, where solids settle to the bottom and liquids flow out into the drain field for natural soil filtration.

Advantages

  • Lower cost — Typically $5,000–$10,000 to install
  • Lower maintenance — Pump every 3–5 years, no electrical components to service
  • Lower ongoing costs — No electricity needed for basic operation
  • Simplicity — Fewer moving parts means fewer things to break

Disadvantages

  • Requires suitable soil — Needs well-draining sandy or loamy soil
  • Larger drain field — Needs more space than aerobic systems
  • Not allowed everywhere — High water tables or clay-heavy soil may disqualify your property

Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs)

Aerobic systems use oxygen to break down wastewater more completely than conventional systems. They include an aeration chamber where air is pumped in to support aerobic bacteria, followed by a clarification chamber and a pump to distribute treated effluent.

Advantages

  • Works in poor soil — Can be installed in clay-heavy soil and high water table areas
  • Smaller drain field — Requires less space than conventional systems
  • Higher treatment level — Produces cleaner effluent, better for environmentally sensitive areas
  • Required in many areas — Many Harris and Montgomery County lots require aerobic systems

Disadvantages

  • Higher cost — Typically $10,000–$20,000+ to install
  • Higher maintenance — Requires a TCEQ-mandated maintenance contract with servicing every 6 months
  • Electrical dependence — Pumps and aerators need power; no electricity means no treatment
  • More components — Aerators, pumps, floats, timers, and alarms can fail

Which System Is Right for You?

Choose Conventional If:

  • Your property has well-draining soil (sandy or loamy)
  • You have adequate space for a drain field
  • You want the lowest total cost of ownership
  • Local regulations allow conventional systems in your area

Choose Aerobic If:

  • Your property has clay-heavy soil or a high water table
  • You have limited space for a drain field
  • Your property is in an area that requires aerobic systems (common in many Houston-area subdivisions)
  • You want the highest level of wastewater treatment
