Your well pressure tank is a critical component that stores pressurized water and regulates pump operation. Without a functioning pressure tank, your pump would run every time you turned on a faucet — burning out the motor and delivering inconsistent water pressure. Here's how to identify and solve common pressure tank problems.

How a Pressure Tank Works

A pressure tank contains a rubber bladder that separates compressed air from water. As the pump fills the tank, the air compresses. When you open a faucet, the compressed air pushes water out — the pump doesn't need to run until the pressure drops to the cut-in point. This cycle (pump on → fill tank → pump off → use stored water → pump on again) protects the pump motor and delivers steady water pressure.

Common Pressure Tank Problems

1. Waterlogged Tank (Short Cycling)

Symptoms: The pump turns on and off rapidly — sometimes every few seconds. This is the most common and most damaging pressure tank problem.

Cause: The internal bladder has failed, allowing water to fill the air chamber. Without compressed air, there's no pressure storage, so the pump cycles every time water is used.

Solution: The tank must be replaced. A waterlogged tank will quickly destroy your pump motor through excessive cycling. This is an urgent repair.

2. Low Water Pressure

Symptoms: Water pressure feels weak, or pressure fluctuates significantly.

Causes: The tank's air charge may be too low, the pressure switch settings may be wrong, or the tank may be undersized for your demand.

Solution: Check and adjust the tank's air charge (should be 2 psi below the pump's cut-in pressure). If the bladder is intact, recharging the tank may solve the problem. If not, replacement is needed.

3. No Water

Symptoms: No water when you turn on a faucet.

Causes: While this could be a pump failure, it can also be a pressure switch failure or a completely failed tank. The pressure switch tells the pump when to turn on — if it fails, the pump won't run.

Solution: Check the breaker and pressure switch. If both are fine, call a professional to diagnose whether the issue is the tank, switch, or pump.

4. Pump Runs Constantly

Symptoms: The pump never shuts off.

Causes: A leak in the system, a failed pressure switch that's stuck in the "on" position, or a tank that can't reach cut-off pressure.

Solution: Check for visible leaks. If none are found, the pressure switch and tank need professional diagnosis. A constantly running pump will burn out quickly.

How to Check Your Pressure Tank

You can perform a simple check:

1. Turn off power to the pump
2. Open a faucet to drain the tank — if water continues to flow for a long time, the tank has good capacity; if it stops quickly, the tank may be waterlogged
3. Check the air valve — press the Schrader valve (like a tire valve) on top of the tank. If water comes out instead of air, the bladder has failed
4. Check the air pressure — with the tank empty, use a tire pressure gauge. It should read 2 psi below your pump's cut-in pressure (typically 28–38 psi)

How Long Do Pressure Tanks Last?

A quality pressure tank typically lasts 10–15 years. Factors affecting lifespan include water quality (minerals and sediment accelerate wear), usage volume, and maintenance. If your tank is approaching this age, consider proactive replacement.
